CHELTENHAM DAY 4:
SELECTIONS:
1330 CHELTENHAM 1 point each way BARWELL BRIDGE Â 5th at 16/1 Â -2 pts
1440 CHELTENHAM 2 point win RESTLESS HARRY Â Â fell at 8/1 Â Â (in the process of running a gallant race when fell at last) Â -2pts
The final day of another epic festival is upon us with the mouth watering clash of Kauto Star and Denman in the Gold Cup. I am in the Kauto camp and hope that he can pick up his third Gold Cup. In the first race the Irish look to have a strong hand but I am going to opt for a bit of an outsider in the shape of BARWELL BRIDGE (currently 25/1). He has run three solid races including a good second to Blue Nymph (giving 13lbs to the winner) and the form has been franked by the runners behind. My other selection is RESTLESS HARRY (currently 8/1) in the 1505 Â Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle who has rock solid form including a second to Reve de Sivola who ran a great race on Wednesday. The other one to catch my eye is the David Pipe trained Chartreux who could be the dark horse of the race.
CHELTENHAM DAY 3:
SELECTIONS: NONE
The bookies continued to clean up with some big shocks on Day 2 including Master Minded getting turned over in the Champion Chase. Our selection Reve de Sivola ran a great race to come second in the Neptune although slightly painful that my other fancy Peddlers Cross was the one that beat him! Day of a Lifetime ruined any chance by being far too keen - he managed to interfere with most runners and almost took a detour via Cheltenham town centre on one of the turns. The 40/1 winner looked a serious machine as he completely destroyed the field.
Today sees some very tricky races and I am going to sit it out so I can save my pennies for an attack on the final day tomorrow. I can't see past Alfie Sherrin in the 1405 Pertemps Final, but at 100/30 in a 24 runner handicap field there is not much value. The other one that caught my eye is Galant Nuit in the final race of the day, the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Cup. The combination of Nina Carberry and Ferdy Murphy looks very tasty but the best price 9/1 available with Ladbrokes seems a little skinny for what the horse has achieved so far.
CHELTENHAM DAY 2:
SELECTIONS: 1405 CHELTENHAM Â 2 points each way REVE DE SIVOLA 2nd at 15/2 Â Â Â + 1.75 Â pts
1715 CHELTENHAM 1 point each way DAY OF A LIFETIME Â Â unplaced at 10/1 Â Â Â - 2 pts
Some superb action on the first day with some big upsets including the defeat of Dunguib. Our selection Oscar Whiskey ran a good race in the first but some jumping mistakes at vital stages put paid to him not quite reaching the first three. No excuses for Medermit, just not good enough I am afraid. What is fairly unique about this year's festival is the majority of horses have only run on soft ground this season making it difficult to know how they are going to transfer their form to Cheltenham's good ground. The opening race of day 2 sees the amateurs slog it out over 4 miles and I think we'll leave this one for a bit of arm chair viewing. The second race sees some exciting novices battling it out over 2m 5f. While I have been really impressed by Peddlers Cross I think REVE DE SIVOLA (currently 11/1) looks the value bet. If trained by one of the more fashionable stables he would be a much shorter price as the form of his last win in the Grade 1 Challow hurdle looks rock solid. The only worry is the ground as he has been doing his winning on the soft, but at 11/1 looks a good each way prospect.
The RSA chase looks particularly strong this year with some big reputations on the line. Long Run has been very impressive since coming over from France but at a fairly skinny price and eventhough the jockey is a decent amateur, riding a novice chaser with question marks over his jumping around Cheltenham is a different proposition than riding a seasoned handicapper. Worth taking on....
Difficult to see past Master Minded in the Champion Chase. Following this are two competitive handicap hurdles but the bumper is the one that I going to opt for. Willie Mullins has a great record in this race and DAY OF A LIFETIME (currently 12/1)an impressive winner at Fairyhouse looks the sort to carry on the Irish's monopoly of this race. I hope JP Magnier the pilot of current favourite Shot from the Hip has better luck than his brother Tom who looked well out of his depth on the Irish banker Ned Kelly a few years back!
CHELTENHAM DAY 1:
SELECTIONS: Â 1330 CHELTENHAM Â 2 points each way OSCAR WHISKEY Â Â 4th at 11/1 Â -4 pts
1520 CHELTENHAM 3 points win MEDERMIT Â Â 7th at 11/1 Â -3pts
This is what is all about - I like many other jumps fans are salivating at the prospect of the finest jumpers in Britain and Ireland going head to head over four days of top quality racing. In the opening race of the festival, the Supreme Novices Hurdle, the Irish pin their hopes and hard earned cash on wonder horse Dunguib delivering the goods. Already at odds on they believe he can not be beaten and many believe him to be the banker of the meeting. However, at the prohibitive odds of 4/5 and with question marks over his jumping it is certainly worth looking for some each way potential. Get Me Out Of Here has been backed heavily after his impressive win in the Totesport Trophy at Newbury, but Nicky Henderson's OSCAR WHISKEY (currently available at 10/1) looks to be the each way value for me. Unbeaten in 4 starts he has been very impressive and his thrashing of Cois Farraig last time out has been franked as the runner up recently ran a cracker to another of Nicky Henderson's hotpots, Lush Life. The bookmakers Paddy Power are running an unbelievable offer where they will refund all losing bets if Dunguib wins, so get on!
The big race of the opening day is the Champion Hurdle, which looks very open this year. Go Native, representing the irish, is currently vying for favouritsm but any of the top twelve in the betting have a decent chance. I backed MEDERMIT (currently available at 8-1) at last year's festival where he was runner up after getting hampered at the last and I am going to stick with him again this year. He has a decent track record and his earlier runs this season can be forgiven as his yard was in the doldrums. However, a comprehensive beating of 2009 Champion Punjabi last time out showed him to be right back to his best and the fact that he has only run 11 times in his career means he is relatively lightly raced and open to further improvement. His pilot, Choc Thornton, is always a jockey to be followed at the festival so I advise putting a few pennies on this combination.
These are going to be my two big investments of the opening day, but there are a few others that caught my eye. In the Arkle Trophy Somersby looks to be a class act and his trainer Henriette Knight certainly knows how to prepare a horse to peak at the festival. The William Hill Trophy looks to be a bit of a lottery but often worth following the money in this race. The Irish could cap a good opening day in the final two races with Enda Bolger, who has  monopolised the cross country chase in recent years, having 5 of the 16 entrants in the 4pm Cross Country race. The final race of the day, the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle, revolves around whether Quevega is back to her best, so I am going to sit this one out and just enjoy the action.
